A free winter holiday

1939 - 1943

In 1939, one evening at the family home, dad, his parents and other family members, along with some friends who were over for dinner, had their evening rudely interrupted by some Russian soldiers who informed them all that they had a couple of hours to gather belongings as they were all going for a free holiday, courtesy of Uncle Stalin, to a Russian labour camp in Siberia. Dad and his family were nothing special, this free holiday was offered to tens of thousands of families in Eastern Poland. Dad and his parents managed to survive the harsh conditions, temperatures in the -50’s, lack of food and extremely physical work, unfortunately many of the elder relatives didn’t.
