Finally in 1947 Dad and parents moved to the UK (presumably after all the time in the desert and sun they felt like having some rain) and ended up at a demob camp in Ipswich (where I believe they got their wish). Dads father was one of the Polish offers responsible for the demob process and after all servicemen had been demobbed, he signed is own papers and officially demobbed himself. The next major chapter in dad’s life was when he went to study in Southend-on-Sea Technical College. There were a couple of initial hiccups to overcome in the early days, the first was having to learn English, and the second was to explain to the College administrators that he was actually male and not female, the college had received the first name and not having ever seen the name Wladyslaw before (and having no idea how to pronounce it) had guessed incorrectly and thought he was female and subsequently had enrolled him on to a secretarial course. This was swiftly changed to an Engineering course. Not only did doing engineering set him up for his entire professional life, but this is also where he met his future wife.
